Best of luck this weekend!! I coached my kids every chance I could. Baffles me that parents would rather just watch than have a chance to experience sports with the kids! Now my kids are in HS and it sucks! I sit in the stands with everyone else. Best of luck to the Wamps in Williamstown!
WEEI Afternoons are still struggling!? No way! Not that a name is everything, but even the brand “WEEI Afternoons” is lackluster and fits the nondescript nothingness it gives each day. Ted Johnson has to be the worst radio “talent” in years on Boston airwaves, and that includes you and Mego—kidding about the you part.
Honestly, what does it matter at this point, though? They may as well put some $60,000 a year warm bodies in the chairs and let the lukewarm advertising dollars roll in so they turn a modest profit while it dies. They’re just way behind the 8 ball now, completely out of the zeitgeist of sports media. There is practically nothing they can do to become relevant now.
It matters for a bunch of reasons, and I disagree with just punting it off. But I wonder if they feel like you do and are willing to roll this into football. We'll find out next month!
But now can they come back from 1.9? I just think it’s too far gone, especially if talent after talent has failed in the spot. There hasn’t been a transcendent talent since Kirk on Boston radio, and with their fear of pushing the envelope they won’t find any talent that moves the needle. And I’m not trying to parrot what Kirk says because the talent doesn’t just need to be brash and combative. But as an example Carrabis should have been a key person they targeted for afternoons—someone who connects with a different demographic than a Belichick disciple and a fourth rate comedian.
They need someone(s) who will go after Felger and Mazz, play their sound, mock them, have fun, do some viral shit, etc. If Ted Johnson goes viral it won't be a good thing or on purpose
You’re both right. They need a real difference maker who will mock Felger and Mazz…if Kirk were still on in the morning or the Big O was still on they’d have crucified Mazz for that incident. It’s actually comical that nobody at ‘EEI sees or understands this. Radio is a different beast than it was even 10 years ago. Gone are the days of owning the airwaves. Podcasts, YouTube and everything else digital has fragmented the way people consume media. The days of large market shares are gone. Ratings like F&M get are nice but their share of the market has fallen. I don’t regularly listen anymore unless a big story breaks. I’d rather listen or watch Minihane, he’s far more entertaining even when I disagree with him. My friends can’t believe I listen to him because of what he’s said about the Catholic Church or priests, but I can’t help it, he’s damn entertaining and some priests were indeed sick freaks. That said, he is dialed up to 11 a lot! He’s tough on producers too. RoboDuck got off lightly.
Great read as always Mut. And you couldn't be more spot on about coaching your kids and how time flies. When we were doing college football spots, my kids were all school age like yours. Now, two are married, one has four kids and the youngest is 26. Blink and it happens.
I coached all of them at some point in their lives and we still talk about it, some of which was 25 years ago.
One suggestion - my last year coaching my son's baseball team - he played HS football but loved baseball so we found a league for 9/10 graders who didn't play in high school or travel. Anyway, we had a good year, won the end of season tournament. Before we split the last time, I took a new baseball and had each of the players autograph it. Still have it almost 10 years later. Maybe if you coach your son's team again next year you could give it a try. Promise it'll instantly become the most valuable piece of memorabilia you own.

Braintree! Thanks DTH, have a good weekend.

Fair shot at me, I respect it.

Taking your word on coaching your kids if you can. Was a part of 3rd Grade Girls coach evaluations and the placement email feedback is scaring me
1000% right on coaching your kids. Great Mutstack as always Mr. Mutnansky.
David...thank you, my friend.

Thanks, Bama. That’s a great idea.
Cutout the trending in the afternoon.
