NYRA’s Andy Serling often uses the phrase when a horse takes surprising, often big money, and wins. Sometimes it’s a horse that makes sense on paper. Other times the only thing that stands out is the money the horse takes.
“They knew.”
Who are they? I have no idea. But on Saturday in the finale, they knew.
#11 Saint Selby was parked way outside in a the 25K claimer. He flashed speed and faded in his last at Monmouth. Dropping into a straight claimer, was likely to show speed again Saturday.
We used him in our published Pick 3 play, but were dead after Chad Brown dominated the 10th with Accretive off the layoff.
Saint Selby was 11-1 in the win market, but the Pick 3 will pays told a different story.
It’s good to have friends who, like you, are firing every day at Saratoga. Fellow degen Mike D texted me.
“The 11 took serious money in multis here.”
Let’s look at the Pick 3.
$18.80 for $1.
Good for the second lowest of all the payouts in the Pick 3. In a field of nine as part of a competitive claiming race.
They knew.
Mike was smart enough to put a few bucks on #11 to win. I sat on my hands, hoping our pick of Just Call Ray would get us all the money we lost the previous eight days at the meet.
No bueno. Showed little as a closer.
#11 Saint Selby broke like a rocket, repelled a horse late and won at 10-1. Paid $23 to win. And a shockingly low $18.80 in the Pick 3.
They knew.

We were right to make sure to mention Geaux Rocket Ride heading into the Haskell on Saturday. We were also right that the pick of Tapit Trice on top could look dumb.
In a weirdly run race (NBC cameras did no favors), Arabian Knight was headed early and wanted to go on. He took the lead at the top of the stretch but Geaux Rocket Ride pounced and put him away. Then fought off Mage late for the win. Great ride by Mike Smith to take advantage of the early battle up front. He earned a 100 Beyer so the race was legit.
If indeed that was a “prep” for Mage and the target is the Travers, well, mission accomplished.
Tapit Trice never a factor. Looked more focused on the crowd than he did the race in the lane.
Sunday at Saratoga is a mixed bag of a card. It’s a Linda Rice play for our Two Minute Pick Presented by NYRA Bets.
In Race 6, big buzz on Todd Pletcher’s #10 Camera. The horse cost over a million bucks and apparently is training well. #buzz
In that same race one of my favorite angles at Saratoga - Steve Asmussen second career start. Used to be an auto bet for me at Saratoga, but Camera may force me into exactas. Some horses he’s won with, with this angle - Jackie’s Warrior, Echo Zulu and Disarm among others. Wish she showed more on debut against Saratoga Secret - who came back to run second in the Schuylerville.
Race 10 is a great scramble, I want to bet the 11.
Race 5 is devoid of speed and the 5 and 8 can take advantage here.
I thought the 4 looked interesting off the claim for a trainer with two wins at the meet from three starters. Some back class there.
