Well, pace makes the race.
And Chad Brown’s Randomized was allowed to control the pace from gate to wire in winning the Grade I Alabama Stakes Saturday at the Spa.
This filly had flashed plenty of talent - my question was the mile and a quarter. Distance questions always seem less important in the aftermath when horse is allowed to control on the front end like that.
You knew the pace would be an issue for favored Wet Paint when that one was in third on the backstretch.
In fact, the horses that were 1-3-2 at the half; finished 1-2-3.
Credit to our guy Mike D who liked Randomized. He also liked the winner of the Lake Placid.
Good day for Mike D! Our pick in that race was … a non-factor.
Not a good day for us. Off the mark really from the jump.
The good news is the weather is great Sunday, looks good for Travers well, and lots of opportunities today!

Our Two Minute Pick is a 10-1 shot in Race 7 Sunday.
There are some horses that, I think, are more likely winners than our selection on the Sunday card but at much lower prices.
In Race 3, #2 Strong Odor (named after many of our picks this summer) is as fast as any horse in the field and might be the fourth choice on the board. But with two scratches, I could not take 3-1 on this horse. I also didn’t want to horse in a five-horse field. I’ll be betting at 4-1 or better. Mike Maker has won seven races across the country the last week and might be heating up. He’s 21% in claiming races 10-40K at Saratoga.
In Race 6, #8 Lamorna is the trip horse of the day. Maybe the meet. Slow start, big finish sprinting last time. Now stretches out and is bred for it. Is the favorite at 7/2 and that would be the lowest price I could take.
In the featured Bolton Landing, #5 She’s Fire is supposed to blast off and could be the speed of the speed at 4-1. I’d be in at that price.
Some ideas for you - feel free to comment below if you have any ideas on the Sunday card!
Good luck if you’re playing. And a happy Travers Week Eve!
